How to Relieve Muscle Pain Caused by the Chikungunya

The Chikungunya is an infectious disease caused by a virus transmitted by the bite of a mosquito. It is common in Africa, India and Southeast Asia.This disease is characterized by sudden onset of fever (over 38.9 ° C). It also causes strong polyarthralgia (pain in several joints) or symmetrical pain in joints. The distal joints – like the hands, wrists, ankles and knees – are affected, while the proximal joints – shoulders and hips – are not attacked.

The chikungunya also cause allergies and strong myalgia (muscle pain). The joint pain leaves the individual weakened by prolonged periods and influences the way to walk the victim. In fact, the word “chikungunya” means “those who bend” in the dialect of some people of East Africa.  Although there is no cure for this disease, the victim may adopt certain procedures to reduce pain and discomfort during the recovery.

 Method 1 : Relieving muscle pain during the acute stage of the disease

1.Rest as much as possible.

People with chikungunya are unlikely to do much.However, it is important to reserve all the energy to fight the infection, getting lying in bed and sleep, since sleep allows the body to “fix”, relieving the discomfort.Rest for about two weeks or more.

2.Stay hydrated.

Muscle tissue is 75% water in its composition.  When the body’s hydration levels are low, the muscles are more susceptible to cramps, contractures and other types of discomfort.  The  high temperature, which contributes significantly to dehydration, leaving the muscles more susceptible to pain.

Drink plenty of water and other fluids to stay hydrated.If there is nausea, take sips of water, sports drinks or electrolyte drinks. Creating an electrolyte drink is easy; just mix six glasses of water, a cup of sugar, two teaspoons salt and stir.

Always check if the patient is dehydrated . Individuals with this disease are very susceptible to dehydration and will very likely have to be fed – without forgetting the liquid – due to lethargy, weakness and inability to care for themselves . Diarrhoea and vomiting are not as prevalent in chikungunya, then, are not the major causes of lack of fluids in the body.In some cases, rehydration is via intravenous fluids.

3. Ask the doctor about the consumption of narcotic analgesics.

He may prescribe medications with codeine, methadone, paracetamol and others to treat severe pain. It is common for the disease to be treated with narcotic analgesics, since the victim is very weak.

  • The recommended dosage of each narcotic analgesic varies according to its composition. Generally it is consumed orally in capsule format.
  • Do not take this medicine with Tylenol or any other medicine containing paracetamol.

4.Take a medicine to reduce fever.

Antipyretics can help reduce the intensity of fever, and combat pain.

  • Try to consume 500 mg of Tylenol orally every four hours. Do not eat more than 3,500 mg in one day. Switch it with Motrin 800 mg orally during meal every eight hours to keep the temperature under 38 ° C.

5.Try applying a pad or warm compress.

When the heat comes in contact with the joints and other painful areas, bringing some relief.

  • A bottle with hot water will also be used.

6.Increase the intake of vitamin C.

Enhance the body’s ability to combat muscle pain ingesting 1000 mg of vitamin C twice a day.  This also helps strengthen the immune system. It can be tricky to get everything from food alone, but the fresh fruit and vegetables will always be the best sources of vitamins. Another option is to consume supplements; some of the foods rich in vitamin C are:

  • Oranges: 69 mg vitamin C (portion).
  • Peppers: 107 mg of vitamin C (portion).
  • Red Pepper: 190 mg of vitamin C (portion).

7.Consume vitamin D to help treat chronic pain.

Low vitamin D levels have been linked to chronic pain. In addition, vitamin D combat muscle fatigue and recovery time.

  • Consume 200 ui (two capsules) of vitamin D3 per day. Although able to obtain the nutrient through the solar rays, the patient will not be exposed to them, need capsules consumption.

8.Eat foods easy  to consume.

Soups and broths are good options to increase energy;if able to swallow solid foods, consume them.

  • To fight fever and infection, the body will spend a lot of calories with high metabolic rate. It is important to consume enough calories so that it has this capability.

Method 2 : Experimenting with natural remedies

 1.Drink green tea.

The muscle pain can be caused in parts due to inflammation.Green tea is considered an anti-inflammatory treatment that contributes to the treatment of such disturbances.  Green tea also promotes hyper-regulation of natural killer cells that fight infectious agents. Therefore, green tea can help prevent disease and boost immunity.Drink at least one cup a day.

2.Consume ginseng extract.

According to experts, the ginseng extract can help the body’s immune response, and relieve exhaustion and muscle pain, which may occur in diseases such as chikungunya, who spend a lot of energy in the body.There is no medical consensus on the dosage. Follow the instructions on the product label for more information.

3.Try aged garlic.

Aged garlic supplements can help reduce the discomfort and muscle pain. This allicin in garlic is the component that  helps most in this reduction. The aged garlic also causes natural killer cells “activate” immunity. The aged garlic supplements are the best options to fight infection .

Method  4: Avoiding chikungunya

1.Use mosquito nets.

When traveling or living in a place where chikungunya outbreaks are common, it is necessary to take some                   measures to minimize the risk of infection. Protect the place to sleep with a mosquito net treated with                            insecticide.If you sleep with any body part against the network, there may still be a chance of being bitten by it.

2.Use insect repellent spray.

Use products with DEET, picaridin or IR3535 for mosquito protection. Alternatively, try repellents with citriodora eucalyptus oil or p-methane 3, 8-diol. Reapply them according to the manufacturer’s instructions.Make sure the repellent has a sufficient amount of insecticide to kill mosquitoes.If you use repellents and sunscreens, apply the first guard.

3.Use long – sleeved shirts and pants.

Cover the body to prevent mosquitoes haveno  access to the skin, wearing pants and long-sleeved shirts.

4.Do not leave containers of water open.

Cisterns, buckets and water catchment sites are conducive to the development of mosquito larvae. Cover these containers, especially if there are four or more funding at a distance of 10 m from the house.

5.Be careful in places with outbreaks.

The chikungunya is spread through the bite of a mosquito that transmits the virus, called a vector of Aedes species, which caused outbreaks in clusters surrounding the Indian Ocean. Until the problem of mosquitoes is better controlled, outbreaks continue to be a problem for public health in the region.
