How to Prevent a stroke (7 Steps)

Approximately 100,000 people die of stroke in Brazil every year. Many of these strokes can be prevented. Prevention depends on the control of various risk factors. Age, sex, even race and family history may be factors that influence, but these are beyond your control. Luckily, there are risks that you can manage with medication and changes in lifestyle. Following steps can help you live a stroke free like.



  1. Control blood pressure. Monitor it closely with the help of your doctor. Have a healthy diet, exercise regularly, stop smoking, eat less salt and control your weight.Check your blood pressure regularly.
  2. Control diabetes. Diabetics are at higher risk of having a stroke. Reduce the chances of having diabetes managing their diet and exercising to maintain a healthy weight.
  3. Do not smoke. Cigarette smoking is a major cause of stroke.
  4. Control cholesterol. Have a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol and high in fiber. Maintain a healthy body weight and do physical activities. Perform cholesterol tests every four or five years (more often if it is high).
  5. Stay tuned to alcohol. Exaggerating in alcoholic beverages can increase the risk of having high blood pressure. Drink with moderation.
  6. Maintain a healthy weight. Eat less, eat healthy food and get more exercise. If you are obese or have trouble keeping a diet, talk to your doctor. Consult a nutritionist or join a support group to receive encouragement.
  7. Know that if you suffer from atrial fibrillation (rapid, irregular heart rhythm), the risk of stroke is much higher. Atrial fibrillation can create clots that in turn can cause a stroke. Your doctor may indicate treatment and proper medication.


  • Walking just 30 minutes a day, four to five times a week can produce changes that help reduce the risk of stroke.
  • Genetics is one of the risk factors for stroke. If you have a family history of high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease, tell your doctor.
  • A proper diet is to eat more fruits, fresh vegetables and reduce the intake of salt, saturated fat and cholesterol.
  • Learn to recognize the five main symptoms of stroke. These signs appear suddenly and the victim may submit more than one at a time. Watch for:
    • Numbness in the face, arms or legs.
    • Confusion, trouble speaking or responding to others.
    • Loss of vision in one or both eyes.
    • inability to walk, dizziness, lack of coordination
    • severe headache with no known cause
