How To Treat Anemia In Dogs.

Anemia in dogs: what it is, causes and treatment

Check what are the  causes, symptoms and how diagnosis is done and treatment

When we talk about anemia, comes to mind the lack of iron in the blood. Know that this is only one of the causes of anemia, which actually is the reduced blood volume. It is a serious disease that can affect humans as well as reaches dogs.

Causes of anemia in dogs

The causes of anemia may be different, such as:

  • accidents,
  • ingestion of poison,
  • disease transmitted by ticks,
  • parasites that suck the animal’s blood,
  • inadequate nutrition and
  • chronic kidney disease.

The anemia in dogs can occur in several ways, one of which is the abnormal increased destruction of red blood cells. There are some types of anemias: hemolytic, haemorrhagic or even of insufficient production of red blood cells for spinal cord (aplastic anemia).

When we hear about anemia, just what comes to mind is the loss of iron, correct? In animals, this type of anemia is rare, only very debilitated animals can develop it.

In bone marrow within the bones, the cells that comprise the blood are produced. If an error occurs in the process or some factor lead to the destruction or loss of blood or cells anemia may appear. See, the following are some factors that lead to this lack.

  • Accidents: leads to loss of blood due to bleeding both internal and external, but it is considered as blood loss and not just anemia.
  • Tick borne disease: leads to the destruction of blood cells, causing, so at some stage, anemia.
  • Power: when inadequate, leading to extreme deficiency of vitamins and iron, which are essential for the production of blood.
  • Poison: there are many cases of dogs that ingested poisons in rats, causing bleeding (haemorrhage). These animals must be met in a hurry, because this poison can cause death.
  • Parasites: ticks, intestinal worms and fleas have to power the animal ‘s blood. In prolonged infestations they can take the dog to have anemia, especially if it is a puppy.
  • Chronic kidney disease: with the lack of erythropoietin production, the bone is not stimulated to produce cells and, therefore, anemia can occur .

These are some examples of causes of anemia in dogs . For the most appropriate treatment, consult a veterinarian. Only he can determine the real cause of anemia.

Clinical signs of anemia in dogs

Pallor, loss of appetite and weight, malaise, dark urine, depression and exhaustion are some clinical signs that may indicate that your dog is anemic.

The types of anemia in dogs can be:

  • hemolytic,
  • for loss (haemorrhagic) and
  • medullary origin.

Another type is immune cause, ie, the body attacks the cells themselves, producing antibodies to destroy them. This case hurries anemia without any apparent reason, and suddenly, or even as a result of a disease, for example, ehrlichiosis.

Anemia medullary origin occurs by underproduction of red blood cells which are produced by the bone marrow. Such production can be interrupted for various reasons, such as reduction of erythropoietin produced by the kidney and drugs.

Diagnosis of anemia in dogs

The blood test is the best way to find out if your dog has anemia.

With a closer look, one can check what type the animal dog has:

  • If anemia of spinal origin, hemolytic anemia or anemia by bleeding. With only a blood sample, it is possible that the veterinarian perform the necessary examinations.

  • The quantitative test is performed to count the number of red blood cells.
  • Another type of test is qualitative. Through examination of blood smear morphology of the cells could be observed, which cell type is present in blood and which phase. Another possibility is the smear for the detection of blood parasites.

Through these two major surveys is that you can set what will be the best treatment for anemia in a dog .

Treatment of anemia in dogs

Treatment will depend on the type of anemia diagnosed by the veterinarian.

There are some ways to treat anemia:

  • With drugs that are able to stimulate the production of blood in the cord with a suitable feeding with vitamin supplements,
  • bone marrow transplantation,
  • anthelmintics and,
  • in more severe cases, through transfusions of blood.

The response to treatment depends on the degree of anemia. Even with treatment, the mortality rate in dogs with severe anemia is 40%. Therefore, you need to monitor your pet. Once it show any sign, look, as soon as possible, a veterinarian. With great care, love and affection, your pet will have a speedy recovery!
